District 31 includes parts of Broward County, and The Village is represented by Christopher L. “Chris” Smith, a Democrat. Senator Smith served in the Florida House of Representatives for eight years. He was elected to the Florida State Senate in 2008 and re-elected in 2012. He is the Minority Leader and has served on various Committees including: Criminal Justice; Rules; Appropriations; Communications/Energy/Public Utilities; Government Oversight/Accountability; Joint Legislative Budget; and the Select Committee on Patient Protection/Affordable Care Act. Senator Smith, an attorney (JD from Florida State University), was born in Fort Lauderdale. He is married with two children.

The State Senate has four-year terms.

John Knox Village is in the Florida State House District 92, which includes parts of Broward County. We are represented by Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed, who is a Democrat. Gwyndolen was born in Delray Beach and lives in Deerfield Beach. She was elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2010. She has a bachelor’s of science degree from Brooklyn Collage, a master’s degree from Adelphi University and is a retired educator with two children.

Her committee assignments have included: Education; Government Operations; Appropriations; Health and Human Services; and Redistricting. Community Service has included: American Cancer Society; Deerfield Beach City Commission; League of Cities; Kiwanis; and North Broward Hospital District. Members of the State House serve two-year terms with a maximum of four terms.

The Village is in U.S. Congressional House District 22 as a result of redistricting in 2012. District 22 includes parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. We are represented by Lois Frankel, a Democrat. Congresswoman Frankel served for 14 years in the State Legislature and then as Mayor of West Palm Beach. She is an attorney and will serve on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as the Transportation and Infrastructure Committees. The U.S. House has two-year terms.

John Knox Village (and Florida’s) U.S. Senators are Bill Nelson (Democrat) and Marco Rubio (Republican).

Sentaor Nelson was elected in 2000 after a number of years serving in the Florida Legislature, Cabinet and U.S. Congress. He was born in Miami, educated in Melbourne schools and has two children. His committee work has included: Commerce; Budget; Finance; Intelligence; and Aging. Senator Nelson is the leading Congressional expert on NASA and has been active in preventing Florida offshore drilling, improving veterans’ health care and securing a more affordable Medicare drug benefit.

Senator Rubio, an attorney, was elected in 2010 after eight years in the Florida House of Representatives, where he was Majority Whip/Leader and Speaker. He was born in Miami, has a bachelor’s of science from the University of Florida, completed his law degree from the University of Miami and has four children. Senator Rubio has been a visiting professor at FIU, as well as a political analyst for Univision. His committee work has included: Commerce; Science & Transportation; Foreign Relations; Intelligence; and Small Business.

John Knox Village is in Broward County Commission District 4. We are represented by Chip LaMarca. Commissioner LaMarca was born in Massachusetts but moved to Broward County as a young child. He attended Broward College, as well as Boston College. The Commissioner is married and currently owns a construction company. He served for the Lighthouse Point Commission, and he volunteers his time with the Exchange Club of Pompano Beach and Broward Children’s Center.

The Village is in Broward School Board District 7. We are represented by Nora Rupert, who was elected in 2010. She is a former educator, account executive and married mother of three adopted children. Ms. Rupert earned her bachelor’s of arts degree from Florida Southern College and volunteers with various education related organizations, as well as Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
